The 21 breaths meditation practice

The 21 breaths practice is a calming technique that can be used at any time as a daily practice. It is beneficial in times of stress or moments of anger, as it helps to centre yourself and to recover your composure. It is a good introduction into meditation and the same technique can be used with the longer prayer beads as you progress.
Using a 21 bead wrist mala
to count the breath cycles, will allow you to relax and concentrate on your
breathing technique during the process.
The Breathing Technique - Ringu Talku Rinpoche.
- Start by sitting straight, but relaxed, breathe out first and then in.This is counted as the 1st breath. Just continue to breath - inhale and exhale until you have counted a cycle of 21 breaths.
- The counting can be done by moving your fingers from one bead to the next on each in/out breath, until you come to the little marker beads, which will indicate you have finished the practice.
- Keep your body position throughout the meditation and allow your mouth to be just a little open. You do not need to stop between breaths during the practice, just be aware and focused on your breathing.
- You may see and hear things whilst meditating, so do not stress if you mind wanders during the session, but make sure you keep focused on the counting of your breaths.
